Leading America in a New Direction

DFA members are working everyday to build a stronger, more progressive Democratic Party. We believe the Democratic Party must be driven by people-power and responsive to the needs of everyday Americans.

CNN.com Blog - The Tea Party Express has issued a statement responding to President Obama's first State of the Union address.

Comment by Mary: January 28th, 2010 4:07 am ET

The Tea Party Express represents a way of thinking that brought America to the brink! Gung-ho on starting wars for profit never mind the human and economic cost and there the government and spending cannot be big enough. But when it comes to the American people they have no ideas on how to bring the country into a prosperous future. So, as long as they do not come up with better ideas they should stop sniping at the President. He is doing a heck of a job considering the circumstances.

CNN.COM Comment on "Nuns break with bishops over health care bill"

I think typical Americans who oppose the bill should really step back and take a hard, objective look at the people who most publicly denounce it and why:
1) Republicans in general – politically motivated and single-minded, they want to start over and pass another one so they'll get the credit for finally overhauling the system. They had many years and didn't try, and this one's been debated for a year – no one is shoving it down any throats as they love to say.
2) Rush and Glenn – sensationalism, ratings, see # 1 above.
3) Big pharmaceutical and insurance companies – profit, hands deep in pockets of #1. The ambition and obstructionist actions of many Republicans is embarrassing for our country. Gotta give credit to Lindsey Graham for at least trying.

Don't you wonder why the vast majority of healthcare providers support the current bill? This bill isn't perfect but our system is on its last legs and they know it better than anyone. As do these Catholic sisters.

As a side note, I find it very sad that some people in this country are so disrespectable to President Obama. President, not "Mr." I don't recall people calling President Bush "Mr."

CNN.COM Comment on the GOP "Party of Fear"

Yes you republicans are afraid. You are afraid this health care reform might pass and ultimately, you are afraid Obama will succeed. He will succeed in doing something that the last two administrations couldn't do. Like children, you are afraid of not having your way anymore and that scares the begeezus out of you.

I think there is no "win" for Afghanistan. I think what we are aiming for here is the best situation possible. If we pull out totally without regard to the damage we have cause, we look like the bull in the china shop. If we try occupy the country, the Afghani civilians will turn against as, as even we might react if someone tried to occupy the U.S., no matter how lofty their goals. If we try and set up a democracy...I think it might fail. Especially if we try and force it to run like our country. Afghanistan has no history of Democracy and so trying to force a people to adopt our government will just create dissatifaction.

I also don't know what the answer is. I am sure people with a much higher pay grade than mine are feverishly trying to figure a way out of this mess. Where is King Solomon when you need him, right?

This is what I do think. Absolute statements like "Pull out today!" or "Kill them all and let God sort em out." do not work. They are dead ends which only serve to inflame and agitate. If there is no dialogue there is no hope for resolution.

I am one of those who do not believe that a national debt is a national blessing, but rather a curse to a republic; inasmuch as it is calculated to raise around the administration a moneyed aristocracy dangerous to the liberties of the country. - Andrew Jackson
