CNN poll: Majority say they don't count on Social Security

This is exactly why you folks had better keep the Democrats in office. You all know good and well that the Republicans have tried to destroy Social Security ever since it was enacted. They absoutely don't want to help anyone. They fully intend to turn America back into two groups of people, RICH and POOR. They don't want a Middle Class. How are people suppose to get by without Social Security? We aren't all wealthy like the Senators andCongressmen. You work and pay into Social Security so you deserve to get it. After the age of 50 most people start going downhill with their health. Alot of us aren't able to work until age 70 as Boehner suggests. And how can you save for old age when you are barely scraping by? You hear that people aen't working and paying into Social Securiy. Well, whose fault is that? The Republicns, that's who. They are the people who sent all our jobs out of the country. They did it to help their wealthy friends. So wake up America and smell the coffee. I know we aren't dumb enough to vote those Republicans back into power!

The financial industry brought the economy to its knees, but how did they get away with it? With the nation wondering how to hold the bankers accountable, Bill Moyers sits down with William K. Black, the former senior regulator who cracked down on banks during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. Black offers his analysis of what went wrong and his critique of the bailout

from Rowe May 12th, 2010 8:05 pm ET in responce to House Republicans unveil initiative to target gov't spending

While it's a nice idea to have this kind of information (which programs the public supports cutting), there are two problems with the approach:
1. Since it's a Republican site, you'll get typical partisan answers. I'll trust scientifically conducted opinion polls when it comes to public support for cutting programs. Without scientific objectivity, this is just an exercise in bloviating.

2. The Republicans controlled Congress from 1994-2006 and the Executive Branch from 2001-2009 and never cut a single program. In fact, spending increased during that time. All they did was CUT TAXES, which was simply pandering for votes, and made the deficit explode! Thus, while they may talk big, they have no credibility when it comes to making government smaller, cheaper, or more efficient. They had plenty of chances to do any of those things, but didn't.
