Celebrating Democracy
Celebrating Democracy - 250 Years and Beyond!. The Jackson Public Library and the Whitney Community Center are partnering to launch a special 2026 series: Celebrating Democracy – 250 Years and Beyond! The first program in the series is Why Democracy? on Sunday, January 11th, from 4:00–5:30 pm at the Whitney Community Center.
Why Democracy? Democracy is often treated as an unquestioned good—the one political principle on which people across the ideological spectrum can agree. Yet its value has been challenged repeatedly throughout history. To understand democracy’s place in the modern world, it is essential to examine the arguments on which it rests. This involves clarifying what democracy is, considering why influential thinkers—both historical and contemporary—have distrusted it, and exploring the strongest contemporary defenses of democratic governance. This program is presented by Dr. Josh Duclos the 1923 Chair of Humanities at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH and hosted by the Friends of the Jackson Public Library and the Friends of the Whitney Community Center as part of the Celebrate Democracy 250 Years and Beyond! series, is FREE, and runs Sunday, January 11th from 4-5:30 pm at the Whitney Community Center. No Limit. Not required, but to help us better plan Click Here to sign up.

Moultonborough Food Drive 11/1-11/30
You've all heard about SNAP running out of funds on November 1st. There are still billions of dollars in emergency funds available but Trump won't allow the Department of Agriculture to release those funds. Today two different federal judges have nearly simultaneously ordered the Trump administration to release those emergency funds. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, our local Moultonborough food bank has depleted shelves. Moultonborough Dems member Shannon Fairchild stopped into the Moultonborough food pantry this morning and saw that the shelves "are basically COMPLETELY BARE".
On the totally wonderful side, Moultonborough youth librarian Sharon Gulla is already on it. She spoke to the city and has organized a food drive. You can drop off packaged food at multiple locations. See the flier they created to get an idea of what they want and where you can bring it. Moultonborough is generous. No Bah Humbug here!

2026 Changes to Medicare Advantage
Come learn about the upcoming 2026 changes to Medicare Advantage in Carroll County from Nancy Papp of Portside Independent Health Consultant.
This informative session will provide an authoritative explanation of why these changes are happening and what you can do to prepare.
Common Man for Ukraine
We are very proud to announce that our November program will be provided by Common Man: Ukraine. Some of you know that Common Man volunteers have visited Ukraine 13 times during the war. They provide food, clothing and many other necessities. They have also been organizing counseling programs and recreation opportunities for children who have lost parents and women who have lost husbands. We should all be proud to have a New Hampshire-based company like Common Man in our state.
The American Revolution Ken Burns Documentary
Moultonborough Dems member Peggy Hoburg would like to tell you or remind you about a very special program on PBS beginning Sunday, November 16th. This may be the most important documentary program Ken Burns has ever made. It took over 10 years to create, and is important for us to see. It is entitled, The American Revolution. Put it on your calendars now!
Democracy on Tap
Mutual Aid 101
We will learn what mutual aid means, how it works, and the actions we can take as a community. I am pleased to announce that local MWV folks will be presenting!
The timing of this presentation could not be better, given the continued government shutdown, the reduction in food support, and increased health care costs for many of us, among many other challenges.
As always, please arrive early in order to get your food, drink, and a seat!
MWV demands action to PROTECT HEALTH ACCESS!
The very real impacts of chaotic decision making and politicized inaction in Washington is hitting real people, hard, here in our communities. While folks scramble to offset unpaid SNAP benefits, people relying on premium tax credits to access health insurance are facing 200%-500% increases in their premiums.
MWV Resistance is heading out to take a stand on these issues THIS FRIDAY, November 7, 12:30-2:30pm, in North Conway during a visit to MWV by the NH Insurance Commissioner D.J. Bettencourt, who — unlike his counterparts in other states — has remained largely silent on the need for Congress to extend the enhanced premium tax credits that are set to expire this year. If the credits aren't extended, what will our state government do to keep people insured?
Bring signs! bring friends! bring donations for folks in need!
“We are one people, one family, and what affects one of us affects us all.”
— John Lewis
Premiums Will Skyrocket for Granite Staters if Congress Does Not Act
$1,344
Annual premium increase, individual, mid-40s making $31,300
$13,213
Annual premium increase, couple, early 60s earning $85,000
Changes in Medicare for Carroll County
The Moultonborough Public Library invites you to a presentation on upcoming changes in Medicare (including Medicare Advantage), medigap insurance and Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage).d
The session will feature Nancy Papp, a leading independent insurance broker with expertise in Medicare and other elder health coverage.
This forum is especially timely. Big changes are in the works for 2026 elder health coverage. For example, all Carroll County residents who now have Medicare Advantage plans will lose that coverage and will need to shop for alternative Medicare supplemental and prescription drug coverage.
The open enrollment period, when Medicare beneficiaries can make drug coverage choices for 2026, begins October 15 and closes on December 7.
Consumer advocates say it’s always a good idea to review your coverage every year and shop for the best plan to meet your needs. This is especially important this year because of changes in Medicare law and the marketplace for other elder health coverage.
Ms. Papp, owner of Portside Independent Insurance in Portsmouth, is not allowed to market her services in this type of forum. But she will answer your questions. Participants will go away with a handout that equips them with resources to continue their own research.
Seating limited, sign up here.
Medicare Advantage Update

Mount Washington Valley Housing Coalition Breakfast
The Mount Washington Valley Housing Coalition (MWVHC) invites you to attend our Annual State of Housing Breakfast on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Fairbank Lodge at Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway, NH.
This year’s theme, “Zoning Changes Aren’t Enough: What Support Structures Are Working Elsewhere That We Can Recreate in the Mount Washington Valley?”, reflects our growing understanding that land-use reform, while essential, is only one piece of the affordable housing puzzle. This event will explore the innovative support structures and policies being implemented in other communities and how they can inspire and inform local solutions in the MWV.
We are pleased to feature the following speakers:
Ryan Fecteau, Speaker, Maine House of Representatives
Topic: What Maine Has Done to Address Affordable HousingJim Wogan, Director of Lending, Evernorth
Topic: Affordable Housing Funds: Overview and Community ImpactsLarissa Crockett, Executive Director, Neighborhood Housing Trust
Topic: How Community Land Trusts Can Support Housing NeedsNick Taylor, Executive Director, Housing Action NH
Topic: State-Level Policy in NH: Legislative Updates and Priorities
Coffee and a light continental breakfast will be served at 8am and speakers will begin at 8:30am.
Tickets are free, though we suggest a $25 donation to support the ongoing work of MWVHC in advocating for housing solutions in our valley. Click here for event sponsorship opportunities.
We would be honored by your presence and participation in this important conversation.

No Kings Protest
In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. Join us at 4 Corners in Conway and in Wolfeboro (153 S Main St Junction of Main and Center Street) as we once again take to the streets to collectively raise our voices against the attacks on our democracy.
In addition to our visibility protest we will also be collecting food for the local pantries, winter clothing for the Way Station, and hosting an action tent for postcard writing and other educational opportunities.
Join us from 12 - 2 for this peaceful assembly!
Our peaceful movement is only getting bigger and stronger. “NO KINGS” is more than just a slogan—it’s the foundation our nation was built upon. Born in the streets, carried by millions in chants and on posters, it echoes from city blocks to rural town squares, uniting people across this country to fight dictatorship together.
The president thinks his rule is absolute. But in America, we don’t have kings, and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty. Grow our movement and join us.
